Obituary of Oliver Dan “Danny” Quick

 

 Oliver Dan “Danny” Quick, age 89, of Bogota, Illinois, passed away at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Helia Healthcare in Newton, Illinois.

 Oliver Dan, better known as “Danny,” was born on October 25, 1936, in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Benjamin Thomas and Emma Elizabeth (Britton) Quick.  

 On December 27, 1936, his father passed away in a mining accident and his mother passed away on February 10, 1940.  Danny and his sister were raised by their grandparents, Elmer Harold and Lydia E. (Lee) Britton.

 Danny served in the United States Army from 1960 until 1962 and was stationed at Fort Hood Texas.  He worked many jobs through the years, starting as a Roughnecker in the oil fields as a young man and later as a welder.  Later he worked at P.O. Baker in Newton putting up grain bins throughout Illinois. Danny worked during the construction of the CIPS Newton Power Station and then became a full-time employee as a repairman at the plant until his retirement after 20 years of service.

 Danny was a member of the Plainfield Church in Rose Hill, Illinois, Winterrowd Masonic Lodge #664, and loved supporting Shriners Hospital for Children.

 Danny was a lifelong musician known far and wide who could play many instruments, but he excelled as a fiddle player, placing well in state fiddle competitions over the years.  He started out playing at a young age and joined his older brothers with the “Rhythm Makers.”  They played with many different musicians over the years for country and bluegrass dances.  He helped organize and manage the entertainment at many local opries.  Danny entertained so many folks over the years with his talent, wit and humor.

 Danny was avid outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.  In his later years, Danny had a place at Rosiclare, in Southern Illinois.  He thoroughly enjoyed the people of Hardin County, making lots of friends and spending countless hours catching fish on the Ohio River.

 On December 5, 1994, Danny married Maxine Evelyn (Riker) Tohill and she survives.

  Danny is survived by his wife of 31 years, Maxine Quick; children, Larry (Gwen) Quick of Newton, Illinois, Lawrence (Connie) Quick of Robinson, Illinois,  and Elizabeth (Josh) Homann of Dieterich, Illinois; grandchildren, Connor Quick, Ashley (Casey) Catt, Brittany (Jaryd) Webster, Britton Quick, Draven Homann, Pantera Homann, Coraline Homann, Halo Homann, Blithe Homann, Theia Homann, Amber Wallin, and Carrie Mettendorf; and great-grandchildren, Noah Catt, Aubrey Webster and Emily Webster; and sister-in-law, Anna Britton of Newton, Illinois. Several nieces, nephews and special friends also survive.

 Danny was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; son, Randy Quick; siblings, Velva (Ray) Riley, Glen (Ilah) Britton, Sam Britton, Martin “Max” Britton, Wayne “Pete” (Lois) Britton, Burl “Bake” (Yvonne) Britton, Richard “Danny” (Florence) Britton and Barbara Joan Spurling; and a special nephew, Brett Britton.

 A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois, with Masonic Rites at 12:00 p.m.  Funeral services celebrating Danny’s life will be held following the Masonic rites, with his cousin Rick Britton officiating.  The burial will be in the Gila Lutheran Cemetery near Gila, Illinois, with full military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion.  In loving memory of Danny, memorials may be made to the Jasper County Shrine Club.  The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.meyerfh.com
