The Southern Illinois Editorial Association (SIEA) held its annual Fall session October 10 at Giant City Lodge in Makanda, IL., where it presented awards to journalists and publications as a part of its annual contest.

We were unable to attend this year, but we did get notification that we received several awards. My sister, Heather Rash and I won 8 awards in total, as follows:
• Newspaper Design 1st Place
• Community Service 1st Place
• Best Editorial Page 1st Place
• Best Use of Photography 2nd Place
• Advertising Excellence 2nd Place
• Best Photo Essay 2nd Place
• Best Local News Coverage 2nd Place
• Best Local Sports Coverage 2nd Place

Several other southern Illinois publications and their staff were also recognized for journalistic excellence in a variety of categories. Among them: County Journal (Percy), North County News (Red Bud), Perry County Weekly-Press (Pinckneyville), Republic-Times (Waterloo) and The Journal-News (Hillsboro).

In Division A, the Perry County Weekly-Press was presented with the General Excellence Award. In Division B, that award was presented to The Journal-News.

The Hardin County Independent won the General Excellence Award in 2023.

This year, the Hardin County Independent was judged in the Pull Contest. In the Pull competition, newspapers are separated out into four circulation divisions. The Independent fell in the Small Weeklies division and our efforts were judged in six categories. The Independent was judged on the submission of specific dates, the February 16, 2023 issue and the October 19, 2023 issue.

This is the fifth year in a row the Independent has won awards! Two years ago was extra special because our mother Julia Hurford Farley won the 2022 Master Editor Award for over 40 years of service to the newspaper industry.

Thanks for supporting this local, long running newspaper in its 154th (almost 155th) year of service, carrying on a 3rd generation family business, not to mention the oldest, continuous running business in Hardin County!

Blessings flow.

A newspaper much appreciated

By Jennifer Lane
Editor

I recently spoke to a very nice lady, Brenda Nash of Riverton, Illinois. She is a subscriber to the Hardin County Independent. Like most out-of-county subscribers, they usually have some sort of tie to Hardin County, whether by family or by business. Brenda does not. Brenda found the Independent by mistake, but recognized how special it is and adopted it.
Brenda told me that she received her neighbor’s Independent (mis-mailed) in her mailbox. She said it happened several times. She said she would always return it to him, but she couldn’t help but look through it each time before she did. Her neighbor must be a native of Hardin County! I wonder who he is?
One day in 2023 she decided to become a subscriber. She said she loved the Hardin County Independent, referring to its hometown local appeal, and said it was a lot better than the Springfield paper. She told me she even reads the obituaries in the Independent!
I told Brenda she must know so much about our local communities now. I said it reminded me of the episode of the Andy Griffith Show where a local Mayberry man went off to serve in the war and while there he shared his weekly Mayberry Gazette newspaper with other soldiers. After serving, one soldiers traveled to Mayberry to visit and knew everyone in town. Citizens of Mayberry were very suspicious of the man who seemed to know everything about everybody. They had no idea who he was, but they were afraid to ask him. Finally at the end of the episode he revealed that he knew everyone because he had read the Mayberry Gazette in the service each week. In the show, the newspaper had a very local appeal, probably similar to the days when the Hardin County Independent had Rosiclare News, Elizabethtown, News, etc. (Literal gossip gathered by ladies in each town and printed weekly). The soldier really did know everyone in town because he read about them each week in the paper.
The way the world is today, we can’t print the Rosiclare and Elizabethtown News (gossip sections) like we used to, because of liability. I know that many people miss it, but you can read and enjoy it in the “Out of the Past” column my mother / former editor Julie Hurford Farley publishes each week. It’s a peek back into the good old days.
Much appreciated –
The newspaper is much appreciated by those who are from here, by those who are from here but have moved away, and by those people who stumble across the paper, like Brenda Nash did.
I have so many people tell me, who never used to get the paper, that they are so thankful for subscribing and wouldn’t miss a week now that they know what it’s like.
If you are new to the paper or haven’t really read it much, be surprised! You might like it. It’s a good thing for the community. We need to support this paper, which supports this community. My sister, Heather, and I won’t make a bunch of money putting it out each week, but it benefits the community in numerous ways. It’s worth it!
Heather and I work really hard to get the paper out each week. There are long hours involved….long hours in front of computer screens. Sometimes, we feel discouraged and wonder if there is a purpose in putting in the long hours. Then, we will open the mail and get a nice message from a subscriber or advertiser. This encouragement goes a long way! A few simple words will brighten the day. We read them and then throw them into a box where we can refer back to them when we need a pick-me-up.
We love to hear from our readers. We love to hear suggestions. Send us a note next time you renew your paper!
Also, those that have sent donations on your renewals or just randomly to our office, that is encouragement too. It shows us that you see value in this paper and want it to continue. It really gives us that boost of hope that we need to continue.
Heather and I looked through the “encouragement box” recently and we typed up some of the comments that we have received from customers over the past few years, some back to 2020. Some of these comments are from subscribers who have passed on…so bittersweet! After typing these, we cleared out the box and will be looking forward to adding new comments to it. Here are the ones we had the joy of reading through again:

Hello Hardin County Independent: Thank you for the notice, I look forward to my county paper. I just learned there are other ladies who live here in Henderson, TN who get the Independent, but I don’t know who they are. Sometimes I get three papers at a time, but I’m glad to get them anyway. The paper is so beautifully done. I don’t know many of the people who make the news. I want to know when my friends I grew up with go to their reward, and I’m glad to see their names and faces are not in the Independent, feeling they are someplace in the dear ole USA enjoying life. Yours truly, Cora Lamar

Julie, Jennifer, and Heather, I for one enjoy the “Out of the Past” column. When I see names of family and friends, it brings back memories and I recall stories of different people my grandparents told me. The story in a recent paper was about my great-grandfather Sheriff John Angleton pulling a gun on the Rosiclare Marshal. I hadn’t heard that story but I’m not surprised because he had a terrible temper. P.S. Keep up the good work. The ads you do for me are excellent!! Dennis Austin

My great grandparents lived on the northern edge of Hardin County. I can’t tell you how much fun we had riding that old horse drawn wagon with old Charlie Black. My mother was Lorene Rogers and was raised several years there on the farm. Orland Black just passed away a few years ago. My grandfather came to Peoria and landed a job at the Peoria State Hospital back in the 1930s. Thanks to Ora Rogers, that’s how we ended up in Peoria, Illinois. I have a lot of stories to share about Hardin County but for now I will just say the old folks that I remember had a workmanship and character about themselves that was unbelievable. Thank you, Roger French
