Rosa B. Lane, age 95, of Gifford, formerly of Rantoul, passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at Country Health Care and Rehab in Gifford. She was born on June 13, 1927, in Hartford, IL, the daughter of George and Alice (Dwyer) Veach. Rosa married Earl Robert Lane on May 1, 1949. He preceded her in death in 1986.
She is survived by one son, Bruce (Mary) Lane of Cary, IL; one daughter, Diana (Daniel) Grunloh of Loda; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Ann Veach of Maroa; two grandchildren, Robert Allen Lane of Brooklyn, NY, and Carrie Scott of Springfield, MO; one great-grandchild, Morgen Scott of Newnan, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Al Veach, George Veach, and Jerry Veach; and one sister, Ilah Clark.
Rosa grew up in a family of eight, in Wood River, IL. She graduated from East Alton Wood River Community High School.
Since she was a young girl, Rosa loved airplanes and the idea of flying among the clouds. After graduating, she knew her ticket to flying was by becoming a nurse; and she earned her Registered Nurse Diploma in the 1940’s through the United States Cadet Nursing Corps, in hopes to become a Flight Attendant and soar into the sky. A true Renaissance woman, Rosa has been a painter, sculptor, fisherman, camper, scuba diver, and a private pilot.
Rosa’s love for writing began when she was six years old. Her interest in the arts led her to earn her associate degree with honors in Fine Arts from North Harris Count College in Texas. Attending a number of Elder Hostles and Creative Writing Workshops, Rosa’s love for writing continued throughout her life. She has published three romance novels titled, “Connie”, “Charley’s Flying School”, and “The Sermon”; which contain the perspective of strong, capable, intelligent, and caring women. Rosa has donated copies of her books to the Rantoul Public Library Local Writers Collection, East Alton Wood River High School Alumni Authors Collection, and the Brookstone Estates Library in Rantoul, where she previously resided for over a decade. Rosa will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
