Hardin County High School Academic Challenge Team wins 2nd Place at Sectionals, Advances to State, Earns 8 individual medals
The Hardin County High School Academic Challenge team, along with many other Illinois schools, competed on the campus of Southern Illinois University, March 13, 2019, to take a series of sectional exams as part of the Academic Challenge.
Hardin County High School placed second overall! Six team members medaled individually, as listed: Jett Spivey – 2nd in Biology and 2nd in Chemistry; Brody Oxford – 1st in English and 2nd in Physics; Gabe Fowler – 3rd in Chemistry; Lane Williams – 3rd in Biology; Allison Carr – 2nd in Computers; and Lea Parkinson – 2nd in Computers.
The individualized winners along with the whole team advanced to the State competition that will take place Monday, April 22, 2019 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL
The Academic Challenge event is a high school competition that was created and conducted annually by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Engineering WYSE Outreach Program for about 40 years. Although the operation of the competition has been discontinued by UIUC, Eastern Illinois University will be continuing to run the competition with the assistance of many other institutions throughout Illinois and Missouri. Exams administered during the three levels of Academic Challenge are designed to test students’ knowledge of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math, and physics.
The Hardin County Academic Challenge Team members for 2018-2019 are: Mayson McDowell, Adriana Armstrong, Jessicia Armstrong, Johnny Bryan, Broden Oxford, Gabe Fowler, Jaron Austin, Jett Spivey, Lydia Seiner, Kathleen Robinson, Lea Parkinson, Jadrian Wright, Catie Daymon, Allison Carr, Lane Williams, Brandon Fricker, and Melissa Winters. Teacher Jolene Fowler continues to sponsor the Academic Challenge Team after more than 15 years.
